Professor Leaves a Great Past Behind
In Mall of America, an unexpected death took place Tuesday night Sept. 12, 2010 to instructor of Communication at Normandale Community College. Jane Elizabeth Turk age of 30, died while being out with her family.
She survived by her mother and father, Carolyne and Louis Turk; younger sister, Lindsey and partner, Brendan Themes. The family describes Jane to be a very curious, funny, perfectionist person. We had planned a bright future together, just spending time with her was a lot of fun,” Themes said.
Turk takes pleasure in playing video games, watching documentaries, and reading fiction books. This explains her long history of education experience that started from being an undergraduate from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., started her dissertation on public broadcasting, and earned two masters degrees in communication from Columbia University in the City of New York, New York. “She never stopped learning,” Turk’s father, Louis said.
Turk had few jobs throughout her life. She was a professor at Hunter College in New York for four years. Fallowing, in Chicago, she was a visiting assistant professor at Lake Forest College in 2001.
“The teaching and connection with students’ experience at the community college got her to try out a community college close to home,” Carolyne said about her daughter.
“She had a refreshing personality and was my favorite professor this semester,” Amanda Therrian, one of Turk students at Normandale said.
